Join an eco trek and discover the hiddens fragmented forests and national park around Landak River.
Located just 4km from the main touristic area of Bukit Lawang and surrounded by the mountains of the Gunung Leuser National Park, it offers a different trekking experience. Be enticed by the clean, slow flowing river and mosaic of environments.
The agro-forests and fragmented forest patches are hidden within huge sandstone and limestone rock formations, typical of a Karst forest. This unique environment is rich in biodiversity, where wild Orangutans live along with many bird species, butterflies, insects, small mammals and other monkeys, such as the Silver leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus cristatus). The rock formations, cave systems and streams create a diverse environment to explore.

For people that want to experience a real trek in different environments, to take it the natural environment and observe animals with natural behaviour. This is not for selfies, feeding animals or large groups. There are wild animals, which need to be observed from a distance and respected

There are prickly plants and poisonous stinging plants in the jungle, but by wearing long leaves top and long trousers will help to prevent getting scratched or pricked
Why are these forest patches important?
These extraordinary forest patches are hidden and have unique features which create an environment for diversity. The steep, often inaccessible limestone and sandstone rocks have retained much of their tree cover, even though the surrounding areas have lost the large tree canopy.
A small population of wild sumatran orangutans live amongst these forest patches, along with several other animals: Thomas-leaf monkey (Presbytis thomasi), Long and Short-tailed Macaques, which can often be seen. The less seen, but often heard, Silver leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus cristatus). There is evidence of porcupine, civet cats, wild pig, deer, leopard cat, and even slow loris.
There are many species of birds, insects and butterflies. Inside the cave systems bats fly about.
All the animals here are wild and behave naturally, so eco-treks here are about sitting quietly, observing at a distance and enjoying the environment.
Half Day Eco -Trek
A 3 - 4 hour trek in the hidden forests at Batu Kelinci. It is also a great option to follow after having done a trek in the Gunung Leuser National Park in Bukit Lawang.
Itinerary

Start 8am
-
Choose to walk (40 minutes) or take a motorbike ride to Landak River. This will take you through small scale agricultural land, rubber and oil palm plantations

Arrive at Landak River. Small hike up a small ridge and through a rubber plantation
-
Descend down into the towering limestone rocks and forest
-
Trek through the forest, through cave systems and scrambling over rocks
-
Look at footprints in the mud, search for wild orangutans, learn about the local flowers and medicinal plants
-
Visit a huge straggling fig tree
-
The trek will finish with an option to swim in the river and relax before returning to Bukit Lawang

1 Day Bat Cave and Hidden Forest Eco Trek
A full day exploring the bat cave and hidden karst forests at Batu Kelinci and Batu Kapal. Who's ready for an eco-adventure?! Suitable for anyone who want to experience something different and see amazing geological formations.
Itinerary:
The tour will begin by walking (or motorbike ride) to the Bat Cave.

Enter the picturesque cave with dangling lianas which opens into the first cavern. Admire the stalactites and stalagmites, whilst walking into the complete darkness.

Climb through small crevices and over limestone rocks to the other 2 caverns where many bats hang from the ceilings. There are 2 species of bats that live in this cave.

Your guide will guide you through the cave to the last cavern, taking about 1 hour to return to the entrace.
After exiting the cave you will walk (or motorbike ride) through rubber and oil plantations before arriving at Landak River.

Hike through a rubber plantation to the hidden rocks and forests at Batu Kelinci, where you may get to see a wild orangutan. Rest under Umbrella cave before clambering through cave systems and over the rocks. Clamber up the side of one of the huge rock cliffs to sit on the top!

Eat lunch by the river. Swim, relax and cool off.

Continue onto the famous Batu Kapal where the local guide will take you through this amazing cave system, scrambling up over rocks, squeezing and sliding down huge rocks formations.

1 Day Eco Wild Trek
Into the wild....
Step away from the beaten path and journey deep into the untamed heart of the Gunung Leuser National Park. Starting from the crystalline, slow-flowing waters of the Landak River, this expedition is designed for true adventurers seeking an authentic, raw encounter with one of the world's most biodiverse rainforests.
Itinerary:

Starting from out Canopy Lodge, you will walk down landak river and cross to enter the national park. You may spot some monitor lizards at the side of the river or some beautiful butterflies.

Start by a small stream, you will hike alongside it up the mountain. Keep an eye out for any monkeys
-
Navigate through mainly animal paths and weaving through the forest to the top. Look out for pig and deer footprints. See claw marks from Sunbears on the trees. Listen out for Gibbons

Either eat lunch at the top, or wait until you reach the other river and the guide will navigate down.

Enjoy the fresh cool water, scramble over rocks as you make your way down the river. Swim in little pools. Keep an out for Orangutans which are sometimes in the trees above.

The small river comes out at Landak river. Cross the river before making your way back to the lodge.
