We take great care with regards to food and water. Food is bought fresh the morning of the trek and transported carefully. During treks, water is boiled properly to ensure that all bacteria is killed. Before every trek we check that every guest is healthy and has no serious health problems that could be an issue during the trek.

How do I get to Bukit Lawang


There are several ways to get to Bukit Lawang. You can check all option on our transport page




Can I book my accommodation through you?


Yes! We have partnered with several guesthouses and homestays in and around Bukit Lawang. You can take a look on our accommodation page. We advertise a selcetion of places to suit everyones budget.




How far in advance do i need to book accommodation?


If you are visiting during high season (June - October), or Christmas and New Year we recommend booking accommodation as soon as you when you want travel. At least 6 months before if want the guesthouse or hotel required. The best accommodation gets booked up very quickly. If left until the last minute, you might be disappointed.





Tours

What is the transport for the tours


For a tours of North Sumatra, we use a private car with a driver which can fit upto 5 people with normal amount of luggage. The car is air-conditioned. For our short tours, 1 or 2 days you have the option of going by motorbike or in a car.




Where do your tours start and finish from?


All our tours start from picking you up at Kualanamu airport or in Medan and will finish there too. If you want to dropping off somewhere or wish to stay in Sumatra after your tour, just let us know before booking and we can arrange dropping you or arranging transport to your next destination




I want to stay in Sumatra after my tour, can you tell with information, booking and transport


Yes we can help with further travels in Sumatra. Just let us know before and we can look into options for you including transport, accommodation and activities




What is the best time to arrive in Sumatra before a tour?


We recommend arriving in Medan airport in the morning on Day 1, as it is a 4-5 hour drive to Bukit Lawang. This will give you time to settle into your accommodation and relax before Day 2. If you have a flight that arrives late afternoon, it is still possible to come to Bukit Lawang but you may arrive late. The other option is to stay in Medan 1 night and the tour start the following morning.




What type of accommodation is offered for your tours?


We offer 3 options for accommodation; budget, standard or luxury. Budget is normally suited for backpacker style people, standard is suited for majority of people and luxury is for people looking for something a little extra, like hot water, more spacious room, outdoor bathrooms, extra facilities etc. We suggest if you are requesting standard or luxury accommodation for a tour during high season, please book at least 6 months before requested dates so not to be disappointed.





Joining a Trek

How large are the groups for trekking?


As part of our eco sustainable program, we only have a maxium of 6 people in a group. This keeps the numbers down entering the jungle. For our eco treks we only take a maxium of 3 people to reduce the impact on the delicate ecosystems.




Will i see Orangutans during my trekking?


The chances of seeing Orangutans in the jungle in Bukit Lawang are high as the majority of these Orangutans are ex-captive and are used to humans. However, they do live freely so it can't be 100% guarenteed. The chances of seeing Orangutans during an eco trek is slightly less as these are completely wild, stay up high in the trees, and can be difficult to spot. To increase your chance of seeing them, spend longer in the jungle and follow the Jungle Guidelines




Can I bring my children trekking?


Yes! This will depend on the age and fitness of the children. Trekking is safe for children as long as they listen to the guides and follow the jungle guidelines. We offer 1/2 day treks and 1 day jungle treks which are suitable for families.




I am a solo traveller, can i still go trekking and what is the cost?


If you are a solo travller, you can still go trekking. We offer private treks, so you go solo with the guides. The cost is slightly higher for this as you need to cover all the costs. Please get in touch to ask about the price. Or, you can join another group if there is a group trekking on the same dates you want to go.




We are only 2 people, but the price is based on 3 people. Can we go as 2 and how much is it?


If you are a couple or just two people together, you have 2 options. 1: you can go just the two if you but the price will be increased accordingly for the trekking period. 2: You can join another group if there is one on the requested dates.




How far advance do I need to book?


If you want to join a trek during high season (June - October), we recommend booking at least 1 - 2 months before. Its best to book early as to avoid disappointment. During low season (November - May), you can a book a trek up to 1 day before as during this period it is not busy.




What are the recommended ages?


Trekking in suitable for children of 5 years up, to anyone healthy and fit, and able to hike up and mountains. We always check with our older guests of any health conditions before trekking.




Whats included in the trekking price?


The price includes: National Park Permit Fee and registration All food and water Certified guides Porters (for 2 day treks or longer) Camp (for 2 day treks or longer)




How do i pay for my trekking or tour?


We ask that if you book a trek to pay a 20%. This can be done through paypal or google pay. This will secure your booking and the rest can be paid in cash before your trek. We ask that you pay in Rupiah but we can take euros, US dollars and British Pound at the current excahnge rate given at the local office. For all tours, we ask for a 30 - 50% deposit to cover accommodation booking, activities and transport. We ask the rest is paid by cash when you arrive in Bukit Lawang.




What is the best thing to wear during a trek?


For women: we recommend lightweight trousers or leggings. Knee length shorts are ok for short treks. t-shirts or long-sleeved shirts for longers treks. For the feet - walking sandals or trainers. Boots for longer treks. For men: Long lightweight trousers or shorts, t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts. For shoes, same as above.

General Questions

Is there an ATM in Bukit Lawang?


Bukit Lawang does not have an ATM in the village, but there is one in the next town about 30 minutes away. You can get there by bus or one of our guides would be happy to take you. In an emergency the local currency exchange office offers card withdrawels, but charges 7%.




What is the best month to come to Bukit Lawang?


Any time of year is good to come to Bukit Lawang. The only difference would be the weather, rainy or dry. During October - April is the 'rainy' season, meaning it generally rains most afternoons or evenings. The dry season is May - September. However, the weather has been changing over the last few years and can be unpredictable. The high season is between June - September. This is when Bukit Lawang is most busy and most guesthouses are full.




Do I need to bring Malaria tablets?


Bukit Lawang is not a Malaria zone, but there are mosquitoes so cannot be ruled out. We recommend speaking to you doctor before travelling and bringing mosquito repellant for your travels.




What about Insurance?


Whilst trekking with us you are in safe hands and we provide the best possible safeguard security. We ask our guests to read and to follow the strict jungle guidelines, which helps to keep you safe. Our guides carry first aid kits and carry mobile phones in case of an emergency. We register all our guests at the official office and pay the permit fees which ensures that if anything happens in the jungle you are covered for search and rescue. We recomment taking out travel insurance which covers hiking up to 1000m.




What about the culture and what can we wear?


Before travelling anywhere it is best to do a little research about the local religion and culture. You can read more about this on our visitors info page. Bukit Lawang is reasonably relaxed but it is handy to know some local customs
